Each of the three Museum Campus institutions runs its own free-admission schedule for Illinois residents. The Field Museum is free every Wednesday, Shedd Aquarium is free on Tuesday evenings, and the Adler Planetarium is free on a few short Monday-to-Wednesday stretches. Because the Field and Shedd repeat every week and the Adler does not, the Adler's dates decide which weeks are worth planning around. Between now and mid-December, three weeks have the Adler's free days stacked on top of the other two museums' standing free days. All three are on the calendar, and none of them fall on a Bears home game day.
This matters most to people who can walk to the lakefront from Printers Row, the Prairie District or Motor Row. Those residents can treat the campus the way the rest of the city treats a single field trip, going back week after week.
Saturday closes one season and opens the next
The South Loop Farmers Market: Printers Row at 632 S. Dearborn St. holds its last Saturday of the year on Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. That afternoon, South Loop Neighbors hosts its 9th Annual Pub Crawl and Halloween Costume Contest from 2 to 6 p.m. Check-in starts at 1:45 p.m. at Reggies, 2105 S. State St., and the stops include Boat Drinks at Burnham Harbor, Senioritas Cantina, All Star Seafood & Sports and Weather Mark Tavern.
After that, the neighborhood's standing weekly outdoor event goes dark until spring. The weekly anchor moves indoors, to three museums with three different schedules.
Three schedules, one hinge
Here is how each museum's free access works for Illinois residents.
The Field Museum's Illinois Free Wednesdays began Oct. 21 and run through March 31, 2027, covering general admission every Wednesday. The museum strongly recommends reserving online, and tickets are also available onsite while they last. The Wednesday schedule isn't new. Block Club Chicago's 2026 free museum roundup listed free Field Wednesdays through late March of this year.
Shedd Aquarium's Illinois Resident Free Nights run from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, and the 2026 schedule ends Dec. 15. Online reservations carry a $5 fee per order. Booking by phone at 312-939-2438 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Central is free. Shedd says its free walk-up reservations usually sell out quickly.
The Adler Planetarium's Illinois Resident Discount Days are the outlier. They come in short runs: Nov. 9 and 10, Nov. 16 through 18, and Dec. 7 through 9. When booking online, you enter your zip code as the promo code.
Every Adler run starts on a Monday, so its Tuesday overlaps a Shedd free night and its Wednesday overlaps a Field free day. That is why the Adler's dates mark the weeks worth circling:
| Week | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov. 9 | Adler | Adler, Shedd 5–9 p.m. | Field |
| Nov. 16 | Adler | Adler, Shedd 5–9 p.m. | Adler, Field |
| Dec. 7 | Adler | Adler, Shedd 5–9 p.m. | Adler, Field |
| Any other week through Dec. 15 | None | Shedd 5–9 p.m. | Field |
The week of Nov. 16 and the week of Dec. 7 each let you visit all three museums free in about 24 hours. After Dec. 15, Shedd's free nights are finished for the year and the Adler has no more resident days listed for 2026, so Field Wednesdays are the only standing free option left through the winter.
How the week of Nov. 16 can play out
That Tuesday also has a neighborhood event. South Loop Neighbors lists its Condo Corner session, "Going Green without Breaking the Bank," for Nov. 17 at Cafe Bionda. The listing doesn't give a start time, so check with the association before you plan the evening around it.
- Tuesday daytime. Visit the Adler. Free resident admission covers museum entry. The immersive dome shows cost extra. Stars Aligned: Tracing the History of Astronomy and Astrology, which opened Oct. 31, 2025, is included with every ticket package, according to the Adler's opening announcement.
- Tuesday, 5 to 9 p.m. Shedd's free night includes every exhibit and the seasonal Stingray Touch.
- Wednesday. Free general admission at the Field, which includes Evolving Planet, The Ancient Americas and Inside Ancient Egypt. The Adler is also free that day if Tuesday ran out of hours.
The Dec. 7 week works the same way, and Dec. 8 is the second-to-last Shedd free night of the year.
What "free" leaves out at the Field
The Field has the longest free season, and it also has the most add-on tickets right now. The Pokémon Fossil Museum runs through April 11, 2027, and needs an add-on ticket, so it isn't part of a free Wednesday. After the Age of Dinosaurs also needs an add-on and closes Jan. 3, 2027. If you want to see the dinosaur exhibit, use one of the Wednesdays between now and New Year's and budget for the upcharge.
Proof of residency works a little differently at each museum. Bring the right ID:
- Field: a current Illinois driver's license, state ID or Chicago CityKey card. Another option is a valid photo ID plus an Illinois lease, library card, student ID with photo or utility bill.
- Shedd: a valid state ID or driver's license that shows Illinois residence.
- Adler: an Illinois driver's license or photo ID, an Illinois student ID with photo, or a photo ID plus a document such as a utility bill or lease that shows your name and Illinois address.
Game days fall on other days of the week
The Bears' remaining 2026 home games at Soldier Field are Sunday, Nov. 8 at 7:20 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22 at noon, Sunday, Dec. 6 at noon and Friday, Dec. 25 at noon, according to the team's schedule. None of them fall on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, so they never overlap a free day. The Nov. 8 game does end the night before the first Adler run begins.
Game days still matter if you have guests driving in on a weekend. Shedd's traffic alerts list a $55 North Garage rate on Bears dates. For noon games, the garage is limited to season ticket holders, museum employees and ADA parkers until kickoff. If you live within walking distance, none of this affects you.
Thursday through Sunday, Motor Row picks up
Free museum access on the campus is concentrated early in the week. The neighborhood's newest museum fills the rest of it. The Chicago Brand Museum at 2412 S. Michigan Ave. is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, and tickets start at $25, according to Block Club Chicago's visit. Founders Fred Richards and Elisabeth Emory built the collection over 16 years, and it now holds about 40,000 objects across two floors, from vintage ketchup bottles to Cold War-era peanut butter jars. The campus museums have the dinosaurs and the dome shows. This one is about packaging, labels and design, and it's open on exactly the days the campus isn't free.
A few newer spots sit along the walk between home and the lake:
- Cafe Tabeeb, 720 S. Wells St., began soft-opening in Printers Row in late August, as Block Club Chicago reported. Check current hours before going.
- Martini Lounge, 1520 S. Wabash Ave., opened in early September, according to Eater Chicago's openings map, and is a short walk from a Tuesday night at Shedd.
- Culver's is planned for the former Aurelio's space at 1212 S. Michigan Ave. The renovation permit was issued Sept. 18, and the 5,200-square-foot plan includes a patio, roof deck and walk-up window. Block Club Chicago reports no opening date yet.
Mark Nov. 17 and Dec. 8 on your calendar now, and book the Shedd tickets by phone to skip the fee.
Close-to-home routines like a lake walk, a Tuesday at the aquarium or a short trip to Motor Row are part of what South Loop homes are worth. When I help sellers here prepare a listing, I show buyers how a home connects to the places around it, not just the rooms inside it.
