Pullman

Pullman

A novel and peaceful historical borough.

Welcome to Pullman

Envisioned in 1880 by George M Pullman, this neighborhood was developed for laborers with their well-being as a focal point. With the help of architect Solon S Beman, landscape architect Nathan F Barret, and civil engineer Benzette Williams, Pullman was able to make his dream a reality. The International Hygiene and Pharmaceutical Exposition in Prague named Pullman "The World’s Most Perfect Town" after being established for only 15 years. In 1973 the Historic Pullman Foundation was created to preserve the town’s history and expand upon its development with the help of neighboring towns and cities. Solon S Beman designed row houses, apartments, small condos, and lofty executive homes for the workers of the Pullman Palace Car Company. There are still 1000 of the original homes around today, most of which are privately owned. Today the median home value is roughly $127K.

What to Love

People & Lifestyle

Pullman is predominantly made up of professionals and small families. The majority of residents travel by car, with public transit being the next popular form of transportation. A mostly residential community, people who live here tend to travel outside of the area for work, school, and recreation. There is a growing artist community, as two older buildings in row house style have been revamped. Both hold six units, each with a newer building made up of 26 units available to residents, totaling 38 new abodes.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

South Fork Public House is a local bar with a welcoming ambiance that offers beer and wine pairing dinners, tasty bar food, and seasonal beer tastings. The Black Cypress is a bodega-style shop for all of your specialty grocery, wine, and spirit needs. Porch Light Pizza is a great alternative to Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, offering up specialty and build-your-own pies. For all of your shopping needs, check out Stony Island Plaza. This center is home to various stores such as dd’s discounts which offers clothing for the whole family alongside bed and bath, home improvement, and kitchen equipment. Another notable store in this shopping plaza is Ashley Stewart, a plus-size retail store where you can find anything from swimwear to dresses and accessories.

Things to Do

The Rink is Chicago’s premier roller skating rink and is a great spot for kids and adults alike. If you’d rather spend your free time outdoors, there are various recreational parks to enjoy in Pullman. Big Marsh is a nearly 300-acre natural destination for hikers and bikers of all levels, bird watchers, and anyone who wishes to take in the great outdoors. For a smaller and more relaxed natural setting, Arcade Park is a lovely alternative location. Measuring 1.25 acres, this park was donated by the town founder, George M Pullman. Another great local pastime is golfing at Harborside International Golf Center, which has two golf courses that are the “Best Courses You Can Play in Illinois,” according to Golfweek.
